Extracting Photos from Iphoto and Photos on Mac

There has always been fierce debate between Windows and Mac users as to which is the better operating system and which is the easiest to use.

I have always used both, so I try and look at it objectively. However, no matter who you talk to someone will always be on one side of the fence.

I personally think once you start using an Apple computer they are much easier to use than a PC. But be warned there is a steep learning curve which has been known to send new Mac users back to using Windows computers.

I also think once you start using Apple computers it is easier to be caught up in the Apple ecosystem, making it much harder to transfer and move your digital life, photos, documents and settings to a difference operating system like Windows 10 or Linux.

    What is Photos/Iphoto on Mac

Iphoto is an Apple photo app used to view an manipulate photos. It was standard and free with every Mac between 2002 to 2015 and since been succeeded with a very similar program also only for Mac called Photos.

Photos is a great application, which had an uncanny way of your photos always neatly and organising your photos with no effort from yourself at all.

Also, it was very easy to move your Iphoto library from one Mac to another.

But, problems always arose when moving your Iphotos library to a PC or when you wanted to backup or copy just the photos from your library to an external drive etc.

Why would you want to extract Photos from Iphoto/Photos

The Apple Mac Photos application has an export function which is quite easy to use. But, what if your Mac is not working properly, or the app is dmaged and crashed and you want to get your photos from it.

Also when Iphotos organises your images it can make changes and what if you want your original files, just the way you added them?

Extracting Images from Photos and Iphoto

This can be done very easy. As usually with a lot of Mac application simplicity is key.

All you need to do is right click on your Iphoto application which is in applications and look for a file called Masters.

In masters you will see a neatly organised array of directories by year with all the photos you have added in over the years to Iphotos/Photos. They will be in an unedited state just as you uploaded them initially added.

All you need to do is copy them to a USB drive, over a network, upload to the internet or burn to a disk.
