    Computer Battery Warnings

    motherboard problems townsville cmos battery

If your computer still works when it is no longer plugged into the power in the war, you have an internal rechargeable battery inside your computer which should get you at least a few hours of power when not plugged in.

Over time and after a certain amount of recharge cycles these batteries retain less charge and do not last as long, needing to be replaced.

But what happens when you replace your main power battery in the computer and you are still getting warning, particularly during boot up.

Your Computer Has a Second Battery

In most cases your computer actually has a second battery, but for a very different reason.

Your main rechargeable battery is for running your computer when you are not plugged into a power source, but your motherboard has it’s own CMOS battery to perform other functions also.

Every time your computer turns on it performs a bunch of steps in a process to make you computer start up properly.

Starting with the motherboard BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), is responsible for performing some very low level operations like this which is powered by the CMOS battery – a CR2032.

When these small little coin looking batteries start to run low or stop working altogether, you will notice you get warnings when your computer POST’s, and you might notice other problems like your computer time has changed or date reset.

    You’ve Replaced Both Batteries

Ok, so you have replaced both the motherboard battery and the computers main battery and you are still getting errors.

You very well could have other faulty equipment like a faulty charger or faulty motherboard.

If you know someone who has a charger similar to yours, that would be the first place to start and try. I don’t recommend buying a new charger just to try, incase it is something else like the motherboard.

Sometimes your motherboard gets confused and needs to be reset.

I am not going to go into that in this post, but this is the process of basically telling your motherboard to forget it’s current settings and go back to like the dat it was made, a fresh.

Every motherboard has its own was (similar but different) to each other. It usually involved taking out the CMOS battery and all other power sources, and setting certain jumpers to reset.

If your motherboard is working well enough this can be done in your bios settings also.
