Whether your a business, organisation, group of hobbyist, just about everyone has or needs a website these days.
Unlike a Facebook Page or Free web-hosted page, having your own website gives you an online presence which you have complete control of, what it looks like, who can see it, and the exact message you want to get out to your fans or customers and friends.
So now it’s time to make some money. Your’ve spent a small fortune on a website which looks amazing, has incredible graphics, animation and colours. And you couldn’t be happier.
Your all set to conquer the world!
Forwards a few weeks… the novelty starts wears off a little and you start asking, “Why aren’t I getting more traffic or customers?”
You can have the greatest looking website in the world but it doesn’t mean anything
Yes, the dirty little secret web designers, computer programmers and advertising agencies all around the world don’t want you to know is, no matter how good your websites looks it has no bearing on how many people see it or buy your products and services.
Search engines like Google and buyers, DO NOT CARE WHAT YOUR WEBSITE LOOKS LIKE.
This is a hard pill to swallow and i see it numerous times every week. Disappointed people who are promised the world, pay through the nose to get it and are left feeling ripped off.
Google do not rank websites on how good they look, what colours go well together and the quality of music and animation your websites show.
Test the theory Yourself
If you have a website for your business or service, test yourself.
Google search your industry and location and have a look at all the websites which are above you. There are probably many of them and they don’t like that great at all.
In fact most of the websites which rank well do not look particularly great, in fact a lot of them look like they were made very quickly, some don’t even have any pictures or graphics at all.
What your site looks like has nothing to do with how much business you will get or how many people will see your website.
You need to be ranked
You can post your link in Facebook Groups or to friends until the cows come home, but unless your website ranks high in the search engines, your not going to see any serious traffic at all.
If it was that easy to simply pay someone to build you a nice website and then the customers would come flooding in, everyone would do it. But it isn’t.
And this is what leaves a lot of customers angry and disappointed.
Having a beautiful website is nice and great for your ego, but not for your business. If you want a highly exposed business website or any website, its going to take work, and lots of it.
The internet, the great equaliser
The internet for the most part doesn’t care who you are.
If you want your website to rank high and for more people to see it, you are going to have to work hard for it, it’s that simple.
You can pay someone to rank your website for you also, but unless you pay them constantly to keep working for you, once they stop, so will your high google or search result rankings.
And anyone who says they can do it for cheap, really ain’t putting the time in needed, or are doing something which might get you demoted on the search engines altogether.
Cheap SEO Services
You might have heard the term SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). This is the process of creating and maintaining your website to adhere to what the search engines like and look for.
This is not gaming the system. This is simply abiding to their way of working.
Where a lot of people get into trouble is when they start participating in activities and try to game the system. This usually produces quick results, for a little time. Quickly followed by a ban or long time penalty on your website. If this happens you might as well register a new name and start again.
A lot of services will claim to easily get you to the number one result in Google for a small fee. Once you’ve paid it very rarely works and when it does it is always temporary.
Sound
Ditch the sound. You might like hearing your companies theme song, or something you think sounds great… but your customers will hate it.
Not will it only send them scrambling to find where to turn it off, it will also slow down your webpage load time.
Search engines don’t give priority to websites which take a long time to load sound and given you have only got a couple of seconds to get your customers attention, do you want to waste it having them look for the sound off button the entire time?
No Mobile Optimisation
You can’t have a website anymore which is not mobile optimised.
More people use their phones to access a website then a computer now. So your web site must look just as good on a mobile phone as it does on a computer.
Your website needs to change to fit and look good, depending on the device which is viewing it.
This is called responsive.
If your website is not responsive not only will it annoy your customers, Google and other search engines actually demote websites now which are not responsive.
They do this because they only want to recommend the website which give their customers the best experience. It doesn’t matter how good your graphics are, if your site is not optimised for mobile, its not doing its job right.
Questions
Disclaimer: Google and other search engines do not tell everyone their secret source to maintaining and developing websites which rank well.
And to make it even more complex they change their algorithm for doing so a few times each year.
But there are certain things which just make sense and do not change.
