    Understanding Internet Streaming

Streaming is one of those IT buzz words we are seeing a lot, like “the cloud” or “VPN”. Lots of companies are of offering you different streaming services and its pretty hard to understand what each one is and what they do.

Although streaming can be applied to a lot of different internet activities, for the most part it is being directed to us in the form of entertainment services such as voice, video and music on demand.

    The Basics of Streaming

The notion of receiving any file from a source on the internet to your computer of internet enabled device is by downloading it.

To open a file, it is basically chopped into pieces on the senders end, and sent as a bunch of packets in which you receive and build back together so you may open your file in is entirety and use it. Whether it be a word file, documents, picture, program or video.

The problem with this is you must wait for the file to finish being sent before you can open it.

This isn’t a problem for small files, but when we get to much bigger files like video, sometimes it can take up to an hour to download and start watching, which isn’t very helpful if you want to watch it now.

Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Stan get around this by applying streaming technology to your video – so you do not have to wait.

Rather than down a file to your computer or streaming device, as they are breaking up packets on their end and sending them to you, your streaming device will start assembling them in an order where you can watch bit by bit as they are coming in. Never storing the file, but rather seeing it as it come in, before moving onto the next bit and watching that.

    Problems with Streaming

There are lots of streaming services available. Streaming is a very expensive and network heavy process and a lot of servers supplying the streaming can not afford to do it and often run out of bandwidth or can not keep up with demand.

However, there are also some very good streaming services like NBA League Pass, Netflix, Hulu and Stan which have set up infrastructure to handle the load.

But yet, some people still have problems streaming. This is because of two reasons.

You are at the mercy of your own internet connection.

It doesn’t matter how fast the streaming service is, if your internet connection is not fast enough to handle the stream, it will appear jittery, freeze or not play at all. This also goes for lots of people in your home using the internet at the same time. If they are downloading other things and exceeding the amount of internet needed for you to stream at that particular time, you may not be able to.

    Network Congestion

Another unforeseen characteristic of streaming the public never anticipated was the amount of strain it would put on the Internet as a while – in Australia.

Once Netflix become available in Australia the network load increased so significantly in the evenings when people where watching it after 7.30pm, a lot of internet connections around Australia slowed down. Some people with very fast connections still can’t do some basic things at these times because of the sheer amount of people and internet being used in Australia at these times!
