Common Mistakes When Building a Computer – Part 1

    computer questions townsville

Building your own desktop computer can be a good way to learn about computers and have a lot of fun.

Back in the mid 90’s that is exactly how I got into computers myself. I think it was more along the lines of I broke the familycomputer and I was forced to repair it before anyone found out.

There are lots of tutorials and instructions online and videos in Youtube on how to build computers. But, we keep seeing people make the same old mistakes. And to be honest, there aren’t a lot of information telling people what not to do.

The post hopes to give information on what not to do when building a computer.  It will be over a few different posts the next few weeks.

    Too Much CPU Thermal Paste

You would think it would be the opposite – people forgetting to put thermal paste on.

Thermal paste is a heat conductive compound put between your CPU and Heat Sink to keep your CPU much cooler, and it works.

A lot of people go overboard and put too much. That in itself is not a problem, however when they put to much is can seep out when you put the heat sink back on and ooze into onto the motherboard doing damage and even ruining the board and other devices.

    Poor Cable Management

Modern day computer cases come with lots of spaces for store your cables so they do not get in the way.

Poorly arranged cables can get stuck in the components like CPU fan and graphics card. Not to mention if something minor happens it can be hard to get to the area you require if it is all cluttered with cables.

Computers also need room to breather for cooling. Poorly arranged cables can interfere with air flow and make your machine run much hotter.

    Too Power Power Supply Unit

There are not too many problems associated with buying a powerful PSU (Power Supply Unit).

But most of the times the power supply unit we see are usually such overkill for the computers they are supporting. And yes there is also a good argument for buying a good power supply unit in case you add more components in the future.

But few people really ever upgrade enough to the point there heavy duty power supply unit is utilised.

At the time of purchasing, it would be a much better idea to invest the money in a bigger hard drive, more memory or processing power than into a power supply unit you will never fully utilise.
