My Dropped Computer is Making a Clicking Noise

Dropping your computer can damage many parts.

Your computer is made up of all different types of components that resemble humans in a way such as a video card for visual, sound card for audio, the motherboard is like the spine they all connect to, and the hard drive is like the brain which stored all the information.

If you have dropped your computer, whether its a laptop or desktop and it is making some ticking noises it is usually one of three things.

    common computer setup problems

    Hard Drives

If it looks like your computer is powering up and there is nothing on the screen it is probably your hard drive.

There are two types of hard drive for most desktop and laptop computer. The new Solid State Drives and the standard hard drive.

The Solid State drives have no moving parts unlike the standard hard drives which work like an old record player, with spinning disks and an arm that reads the information as the disks go around.

A sudden jolt from a fall can very easily damage the arm and the drive will make a clicking noise as it tries to read the disks.

If the disks are too damage the drive might be unusable again and if you don’t have your back ups, the data might be unrecoverable.

    Fans

If everything is starting up but stopping after a few minutes it is probably your fans.

The fans in your computer are used to keep the main components cool.

There are a few different types of fans such as the one on the case which blows air over the motherboard and general components. There could also be one on your graphics card.

But the most important is on your CPU. If this one gets damaged your Central Processing Unit gets very hot very quickly. When that happens your computer may not boot properly or your CPU will over heat after a couple of minutes and your computer will shutdown to protect itself.

    Cables

If everything is working fine but you can still here some ticking it is probably some cables.

There are a lot of different cables in your computer. Some of them are just for power and other are for sending signals around your computer.

Sometimes when a computer is dropped the cables can either come loose or move position and get caught in one of the fans. This usually isn’t a very big problems bit because the fans move very quickly can make a loud and annoying noise as they fans tap the cables.
