The digital age old question, “Where is my internet going?”
Whether your internet is going somewhere else, slow or not downloading like you think it should, it is always good to have tools on hand which you can look and see not only what speed your internet is, but how much you are currently uploading and downloading at a particular time.
SpeedTest.net
If you want to see what speed your computer is capable of downloading at any particular time, you can always go to www.speedtetst.net.
Speedtest.net is a great site which will run a download test from a network close to you, where you can also check results against past downloads and reference them with insights.
Tools for Linux
The best and easiest tool I use in Linux to see my current network activity is “nload”.
Nload allows you to see your current upload and download speed directly from your console and computer and see how much it is uploading and downloading currently by the second. This is great as you can see it as its changing, given you a much better idea of knowing whats going on within your system.
I use Debian so the command to download is, apt-get install nload.
And to run the command its simple “nload” in your console.
Windows Built in Tool
You do not have to download a program to see your current network activity in Microsoft Windows.
Simply right click on your taskbar and select, “Task Manager”.
Then Click on the Performance Tab and select Network.
There you will be able to see your sending and receiving speeds.
Other Factors – Not Your Computer
There are millions of things which can make your internet run slow. Also, if your speed is lagging, it could be other people using your connection on your network. someone could be downloading, or other watching Netflix etc.
