What started out as one customer every few months is now more like half a dozen every week. I know what you are thinking, “People cant get fouled by this”, but yes they can and do.

Microsoft is the biggest software company in the world, with billions of customers. They do not have time and are not monitoring your computer to see if you have any problems or viruses on it.

How it works

Your sitting at your house minding your own business when the telephone rings. Most of the time it is your land line and a foreign voice on the other end of the line with a few seconds delay between sentences informs you they are from Microsoft and your computer has a virus on it.

You think to yourself, “Yeah, I could have. After all I have a computer, and not only that it has Microsoft on it and it is always playing up, it must be true”.

But it’s not true. its purely a numbers game. Most people in Australia have computers, have the internet and some sort of Microsoft package or operating system.

What happens next

The criminal then asks you to go to your computer and perform a quick few little tasks which include downloading some software which gives them full control of your computer.

They usually then black out your screen so you cant see what they are doing install all sorts of horrible things such as viruses and Spyware.

Spyware is the most beneficial to them because this allows them to spy on you unknowingly, recording back details, usernames and passwords etc.

This is when they ask you for money.

Do not even them your credit card

This is the last thing you want to do. You are dealing with a very dishonest person who you have no way of tracking.

One you give them your credit card, the last thing they are going to do is remove the spyware, it doesn’t benefit them, at all. They leave the spyware on your computer so they can keep recording details and still keeping making money from you.

What should you do?

Turn your computer off immediately.

If your computer is not on, they can not access it. If they have stopped you from turning your computer off by controlling it, pull the power out of the socket in the wall. If there is no power, the computer cant run.

Your first call should be to the bank. Tell them what has happened and ask them to monitor your bank cards. You should also do the same.
