Remote Access Your Computer with Teamviewer

Being able to access your home or work computer from another location, including your phone can be a very valuable recourse.

Whether its because you constantly need to check something on your computer like downloads or messages, or its a one off where you have forgot something for work or study and don’t want to travel all the way back and forth to get files, remote desktop is one of the best options for you.

Windows and Apple Mac computers come with bother there own versions of Remote Desktop and Screen sharing, but for the best all round experience for most users, whether they are doing it from a Windows, Linux, Mac or mobile phone is Teamviewer.

    TeamViewer

    Understanding Teamviewer

In order for Teamviewer to work you need to install it on both devices. The device you want to access (the server side) and the device you want to use to connect from (client side).

Once you have installed on both devices, the server side will produce a ID and Password so only people who know the details can connect to that device.

You can either install Teamviewer to be accessed when the computer is unattended always using the same credentials, or you can set it up so someone has to be physically behind the computer each time you want to connect, using new automatically generated passwords each time.

    Is Teamviewer Safe

This is the million dollar question!

There is always some risk when using your computer on the world wide web. I don’t think anything is 100% safe and I don’t claim that it is. So if you use Teamviewer do it at your own risk.

With that said, there has been a bit of talk about computers being compromised using Teamviewer but a lot of it looks like they were not set up correctly from the start.

Please read https://www.teamviewer.com/en/company/press/statement-on-potential-teamviewer-hackers/ for more information on securing Teamviewer properly.

    Benefits of Using Teamviewer

If you are using Teamviewer for person use it is free. When you start using it with a lot more computers added to your account which can be accessed through the Teamviewer account console, you will have to pay a subscription to use it.

The speed of both your client and server internet will come into consideration when using your Teamviewer session.

If you client device has very fast internet but is connecting to a server side version of Teamviewer on the same network as people currently using Netflix to watch movies, it might be a bit slow or delayed. With two decent ADSL or NBN connecting devices using Teamviewer it is usually very smooth.

Probably the best reason to use Teamviewer over a lot of other screen sharing remote desktop software is that it uses port 80. This is the same port your web browser uses to access websites which means you do not have to reset your router up to map ports and you do not need a dedicated IP address or any DDNS (Dynamic DNS) services.

Please call Townsville computer repairs Nerds for any Teamviewer help.

    What Teamviewer is NOT!

Teamviewer is not a program used to spy on people using a computer.

It is not designed for that and when you connect to a server you setup or own, the people or users sitting behind that server will be alternetd when you connect to it and will see you moving aroudn the mouse and keyboard.

There screen will go back in the background and a big notification will say “Username is connected to your computer”.
