    Townsville computer repairs questions?

Should I turn my computer off when I am not using it

Your computer is designed to run for long periods of time, and servers even longer.

Saying that, I turn my computer off most of the time when I am not using it. They way I look at it, if it’s not running, the less things can go wrong with it.

Even though they are designed to run for long periods, like anything else, the more they are used the closer they get to reaching their shelf life. And even though you might not be using your computer, and if it is in something like sleep mode, they are still using electricity and still susceptible to common computer problems.

Should I use a Surge Protector?

    Short answer, yes.

I mean why not, they are cheap enough and can only help in protecting your computer.

I still see a lot of computer which have been damaged by electrical surges, specially in the hotter, wetting months. Surge protectors are really cheap and you don’t need to buy the big 4-8 port ones. Just a simple 1 cable protector to plug your laptop or main computer tower into will work fine.

Every now and again we see computers which have suffered surge damaged even though they were using surge protectors. I spoke to an electrician about this who has come to the same conclusion as me.

Surge protectors don’t last forever. He recommends people replace them every 18-24 months. Considering you can get them for $10, it’s not a very big fee.

Most computers last about 4 years, meaning you might have to spend $20 in tis life time to protect them from surges.

Why is my laptop running so hot?

Was your laptop always running so hot? If not, there could be a few reasons.

    1. Air flow, your air ventilation ports are clogged with dust or hair.
    2. Fan might have died.
    3. Have you recently upgraded any software, operating system. This puts more demand on the computer and makes it run faster and hotter.
    4. Your hard drive might be failing, they get very got.

These are the main reasons laptops start running very hot.

Also certain applications and demand can make your computer run hotter. Programs which do a lot of number crunching and viruses doing all sorts of things from turning off fans, demanding more from the hard drive and cpu.

    Can I upgrade my computer?

Yes, every computer can be upgraded. But, should you is the real question?

If your computer hasn’t been upgraded in a long time, it will be a major upgrade which you will see major performance changes. Saying that though, for major changes will incur higher costs.

And when do you get to the point, where you spend more money, is it better putting it towards a new computer?

In most cases it is, because at the end of the day, you might still have new parts mixed with old.

If you are doing minor upgrades, it will cost less, but you will see less performance. Unless maybe if you are upgrading from a standard hard drive to a sold state drive, in which will will be substituting space for speed.
