    computer questions townsville

Bang for my buck, what is the best way to speed my computer up?

This is actually a really complicated question, but I am going to do my best to answer it and speak in general.

Speeding up your computer will depend on what you do. Are you playing games, number crunching, writing software or doing graphic and editing, animation etc.

Lets just assume you are a general user, who uses their computer for answering emails, Facebook, surfing the web and playing some games etc.

Without doubt the best way and one of the most affordable ways to seed up just about any computer is to replace your existing hard drive with a Solid State Drive.

Unlike the standard HDD, Solid State Drives basically have no moving parts, no disks which spin and are usually anywhere between 3 to 5 times faster.

They are usually a lot smaller for the price, so if you can keep your existing drive as a slave or storage to store non working files like pictures and videos. You should store operating system files and programs/games on the SSD which should see a huge difference in computer performance, boot/shutdown time and general use.

My computer is running slow, is it because I have to many things on the hard drive?

Probably not, unless your hard drive is 99% full, having a lot of files on your hard drive will not make your computer run slow. That’s what they are designed for, to store files.

It is much more likely something else is going on like you are running too many applications simultaneously, too many programs are staring up in the background, an application could be selfish using up too many resources, or you might have something more sinister on it like a virus, malware or spyware.

Another less possibility could also be your hard drive or other computer component is failing. They often dont last very long anymore and after a couple of years hard drives tend to fail, units overheat in the hot Townsville climate or knocks and bumps take their toll.

Can a computer virus damage hardware?

Although I don’t think I have ever seen a computer specifically designed to do physical damage to a computer, the answer is yes.

The reason I answer yes is because the virus itself might not damage the hardware, but as a result of its actions, it certainly can.

A couple of examples are there was an Internet Service Provider here in Townsville in the 90’s (one of the first) which went down when they got a virus which turned off all the fans on one of their servers. The fans where keeping the computer cool and turning them off resulted in catastrophic hardware damage which needed to be replaced.

Another example for home users is getting a virus which puts too much strain and demand on a computer resulting in overheating or hard drive damage.
