    Misunderstood Tech Terms

    Computer Terminology and internet

I am always writing about technology and mostly computer related updates and information. But every now and again I get emails asking me what certain terms mean.

AS lot of people have heard of these words, and most people have some idea what they mean. But a lot are also misunderstood.

I have gone through my emails and phone conversations and picked a bunch of computer related terms which get mixed up or people do not fully understand.

    Blackhat

In computer terms “Blackhat” usually means violating the rules (not laws, although this could be applied).

The term seems to be mostly used for SEO purposes now. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation which means constructing your website or service in a way which the Search Engines like Google will favour.

SEO is a good thing to do for anyone who wants to rank high in the search engines.

Because it is so competitive, a lot of people dive into Blackhat SEO techniques to further game the systems laws.

    Hacker

Ever seen someone hacking away at their keyboard. It might look at it, but historically a hacker was someone who wrote computer programs.

Through mainstream TV and media, books and movies, popular culture now views someone who breaks into other computers and networks to do damage. But it wasn’t always the case.

In many professional IT circles, a good software engineer is a good hacker.

    DNS Server

DNS stands for Domain Name System.

Like all houses, businesses and apartments (at least in Australia) have street addresses to distinguish them apart and seperate them as geographic entity, each computer or network on the internet has an address called and IP address.

So if I want to go to Google.com.au, the real address is something like http://216.58.220.131. This website you are using (townsvillenerds.com) has a different IP address and every other website you use has a big long number.

Remembering all these addresses would be impossible. So we have these Domain Name System Servers out there on the internet everybody uses to do it for us.

So when I type www.google.com.au, my router or computer will go out on the internet and find its corresponding IP address for me and route me to the Google website, or Bigpond etc.

    Open Source

Each program you use was written in a computer language of some description.

The author of the software made that program using a language and what he wrote which makes that program is called the source code.

A lot of people make software for profit and so close off their code so other people can’t see it, change it or redistribute it for other people to profit from.

    Open Source is the opposite.

The author or authors leave it open and encourage other people to change, edit, redistribute or profit form if they want. There are however different levels of what people can do with the code, but this is the basic gist of it.

Popular open source projects are the Linux Operating system and Apache which runs the majority of websites on the internet.
