Is the Windows 10 upgrade really free?

    Windows 10 Upgrade

Windows 10 is a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users.

Yes, if you have been offered a free Windows 10 upgrade, it certainly is free!

But only if you are already an existing customer.

Microsoft usually charge a lot of money for the Windows Operating systems but this year have decided to give everyone running Windows 7 and 8 a free upgrade to their Windows 10 operating system.

    Why is it free

In the past Microsoft have been charging people for their operating systems.

When these sophisticated systems are released they are not complete. Thats why you have Windows updates usually throughout the life of the operating systems, consistently updating the software and applying patches to whole in their system they or other people have identified.

The motives behind Windows 10 really being free only Microsoft executives probably really know but the going theory about the change in pricing is they want to be able to get as many people as possible into their new eco system and get peoples money on the up sell for future purchases.

    Should you upgrade

Even the paid upgrades to major pieces of software usually take a while to wrinkle out all the bugs.

As of Mid-September I get at least 2 people a week who have upgraded from either Windows 7 to Windows 8 and are having major issues and want their computer to be reset back to an earlier version.

I have used Windows 10 and have personally had no issues and find it very good and easy to use.

    Are their any stings attached

There are not strings attached with upgrading to Windows 10.

However, saying that it can easily be argued that giving away the free upgrade to existing customers and license holders, Microsoft are getting millions of free testers using their product and giving them feed back on what they need and what needs to be repaired.

Either way customers are getting the worlds largest operating system for free and with the rapid upgrade Microsoft are getting tonnes of people helping them test their latest product. Win win for everyone.

    My personal opinion

Although I am predominately a Apple Mac user I really like the Windows 10 operating system.

I find it very easy to use, fast and crisp. I think my computer actually even run better using Windows 10 but I haven’t done any tests to prove it. It just felt better all around.

Saying that I can certainly see a lot of things which might bug Windows 7 and 8 users.

If you are not sure and are already using Windows 7 or 8 there is probably no real reason to upgrade just yet. Maybe in a year or two….
