What is a DNS server
You might not know this, but every time you go onto the internet, check your email of use Facebook, you are using a DNS service.
Every computer, router or network on the internet has an IP address, something that looks like 123.456.789.123. This is a unique address assigned to a host which identifies it as a unique user, machine etc on the internet. Kind of like your street address.
So instead of typing http://179.60.193.36 every time I want to use Facebook and having to remember all these difference IP address for different websites, I simply type http://www.facebook.com and the DNS server I am using (usually assigned to me by my internet service provider) will do all the remembering.
What is DDNS (Dynamic DNS)
The need for a Dynamic DNS service is when the IP address of the host your are trying to connect to keep changing. One day it might be179.60.193.36 and the next it might be177.61.192.22.
For most web services you use online this usually doesn’t even come in to play. But for people who want to connect to a service at their business or home where the internet service provider changes each time they connect to the internet, it can be very helpful.
If you host your own web server, remote desktop or FTP server and you internet service provider changes your IP address every so often, this is the perfect solution.
Zonomi
Zonomi is a great free service for somewhere like your home and you only need one name for your network.
If you want more than that you can upgrade to a $1 per domain per year. You will still need to go out and buy your name like www.myname.com if you want a top level domain.
For people a little more technical they allow access to an API in which you can use to update your IP Address as it changes. Not all internet service providers do this to it is not necessary for everyone.
Dynu
With Dynu you do not need to have your own domain name to use the free service.
If you choose you can be allocated a 3rd level domain which will look something like, ross.dyndu.org which will do the job for non professional services.
To make things easier you can download their client update software on your computer which will tell Dynu every time your IP address changes. Therefor, when your address changes your client software will send that to Dynu which will automatically update your address and people using Dynu will continue as normal with little to no downtime.
