    Black Screen

Since a lot of people have upgraded to Windows 10 I am seeing many computers with the black screen of death. Many customers believe that there computer is still working because they might get the screen manufacturer logo on there screen when they turn their computer on. But it is just your monitor letting you know there is contact and electricity.

There are many reasons which could cause your computer to have a Black screen when starting up. Some of these problems are easy and you can fix yourself, others are a little more complicated.

Most of the black screen problems I see are due to a operating system upgrade. That is your computer is working just fine with Windows 8.1 for example but then you upgrade to Windows 10 and all of the sudden your wifi doesn’t work properly, or your sound, or display.

This can be because the software (drivers) which were making your screen work in Windows 8 was not designed for Windows 10. When you made the change it didn’t know what to do. Some programs have the same problems when upgrading but below I will give you a list of reasons why you will get the black screen of death on your computer.

Common Reasons you are getting the Black Screen of Death

    1. You don’t have all the cables plugged in properly.

Yes the feel nice a snug when you initially connect them and they have tight screws which shouldn’t get dislodged.

But as time goes buy and constant movement if you have a desktop computer and each and every time you turn your display a little this way or that can cause it to loosen up, and then one day you turn it on and get the black screen. It happens a lot!

    2. Viruses

Computer viruses can cause all sorts of problems on your computer including infecting your operating system and device drives. When this happens your computer in unable to work as designed and sometimes will not be able to start.

Make sure you have some sort of protection on your computer and be careful what email attachments you open and what websites you go to.

Antivirus programs are only one form of protection and they are not 100% proof. I see people every day with viruses on their computer which also have antivirus programs.

    3. Power Surges

We live in Townsville and there are a lot of old, hot and dusty houses around. Rats get into the wiring, water, cyclones  and you name it.

Every year during the we season (not this year) there are plenty of computer screen problems due to power surges. It is always good to have a surge protector on any of the electrical devices you have or care about in your home.

    4. Updates

Its always good to make sure your operating system like Windows it up to date.

But sometimes something can go wrong and can stop your computer from starting up correctly. Whether it is your system does not start at all, or you can hear it start but only get a black screen, operating system updates can halt your computer.

There are ways to revert your system back to the way it was before it updated, but you must be very careful doing this as you can also make the problem worse.

    5. Motherboard or Graphics Card Problems

The signal you are seeing on your screen is either coming from your graphics card or built into your motherboard.

Like all sophisticated circuitry many things can go wrong and motherboard and graphics cards are no exception. Later motherboards can be replaced cheaper and more easily but in some cases if the damage was bad enough can compromise your hard drive and data also.
